Collaboration:  Family Welfare Division and Nursing and Social Security Division (NSSD) of MoHP.

SISo Nepal is providing technical support to Family Welfare Division (FWD) in developing the orientation package and conducting and rolling out the orientation to School Health Nurses on ASRHR and FP education and services in close coordination and collaboration with FWD and NSSD of MoHP and other likeminded organizations and experts. This initiative aims to develop the capacity of School Health Nurses and key officials of FWD, NSSD and provincial and district level health offices in organizing and facilitating orientations to School Health Nurses to capacitate them in providing the education and orientations sessions to adolescent students in schools.

Collaboration:  Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD)/Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) and local organizations. 

Under its capacity-building initiatives in the field of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), SISo Nepal, with support from Plan International Nepal, is conducting Training of Trainers (ToT) on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE); Training of Trainers on SRHR on peer education and training media professionals to enhance their understanding of SRHR, with the goal of reducing myths, misconceptions, and misinformation in public reporting. This program aims to develop a pool of certified trainers who will play a key role in strengthening capacity of teachers to enhance the delivery of CSE, and conducting peer education sessions for adolescents, empowering them with accurate knowledge and skills related to SRHR education and advocacy.

Collaboration: Bhume Rural Municipality and Education Development and Coordination Unit, Rukum East.

SISo Nepal is providing technical support for the development of contextualized and age-appropriate Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) textbooks as part of the local curriculum, with financial support from Plan International Nepal.

Aligned with the ITGSE 2018 guidelines, this initiative is designed to meet the specific learning needs of students in grades 4 to 8. The textbooks aim to equip adolescents with essential knowledge, skills, and values, fostering their overall health, well-being, and informed decision-making.

Through this effort, SISo Nepal promotes a rights-based, inclusive, and culturally relevant approach to sexuality education, ensuring young learners receive accurate, age-appropriate information to support their development in a safe and informed manner.

Collaboration: National Health Training Center (NHTC), Family Welfare Division (FWD), and National Health Education, Information, and Communication Center (NHEICC) of Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP).

SISo Nepal provided technical support to the National Health Training Center (NHTC) in revising the Training Package on Adolescent-Friendly Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) Services. This initiative was undertaken in close coordination and collaboration with NHTC, FWD, and NHEICC with the objective of strengthening the capacity of health institutions and service providers. The revised training package aims to enhance the quality of trainings for the accessibility of comprehensive ASRH services, ensuring improved adolescent-friendly healthcare across Nepal.

Collaboration: National Health Education, Information, and Communication Center (NHEICC) and Family Welfare Division (FWD) of Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP)

As a strategic partner of Plan International Nepal (Country Program 2023-2028), SISo Nepal is providing technical support for the contextualization of the Champion of Change Program. SISo Nepal has been actively engaged in contextualizing the program to the local context, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness in promoting gender equality, youth empowerment, and social transformation across Nepal. This initiative focuses on social behavior change and the capacity building of master trainers and local facilitators to effectively implement the program at the community level.

Goal and Objective:

Impact: A youth-led social movement that challenges social norms and gains society-wide support for gender equality and girls right.

Key Approach (Method)

  1. Building Technical Capacity and Providing Technical Support for CoC implementation to Plan International Nepal and its implementing partners:
    • Conduct Rapid need assessment.
    • Draft contextualized modules for Boys and Girls (separate) on gender, sexual and reproductive health, DRR-CC and WASH.
    • Review of the modules by NHEICC and FWD-ASRH Sub-Committee
    • Organize finalization workshop.
    • Pre-test of the modules and finalize incorporating feedbacks.

    • Finalize the contextualized modules (total 15 modules and 2 facilitators guide)

Collaboration: SISo Nepal, Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD)/Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) and provincial and local governments in Lumbini and Sudur Pashchim province of Nepal.

As an implementing partner of UNFPA under the Country Program Action Plan (2023-2027), SISo Nepal provided technical support in strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD), and provincial and local governments in Lumbini and Sudur Pashchim provinces.

With technical and financial support from AusAid/UNFPA (2023), SISo Nepal facilitated capacity-building initiatives aimed at the effective implementation of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) to prevent gender-based violence and empower young people with knowledge and skills for a healthier and more equitable society. This includes:

  • Supporting provincial and local governments in integrating CSE into the curriculum.
  • Conducting advocacy orientations dialogue and interactive sessions with government officials, School Management Committees (SMC), Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA), and other key stakeholders.
  • Providing review and refresher training for teachers.
  • Training peer educators (CSE Champions) to enhance student engagement.

With financial support from AusAid/UNFPA (2022), SISo Nepal has provided technical support and capacity-building assistance to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD), and provincial and local governments in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Key initiatives include:

  • Building the capacity of provincial and local governments to effectively implement CSE.
  • Integration of CSE into school curricula to promote gender equality and informed decision-making.
  • Scaling up mentoring and coaching for teachers to enhance their ability to deliver CSE effectively.
  • Revising the CSE trainers’ guide to align with evolving educational needs and best practices.
  • Developing a training participants’ handbook to support educators and stakeholders in delivering impactful CSE sessions.

Key Intervention Area:

  1. Building Technical Capacity and Providing Technical Support for CSE to Federal Teacher Training Center, CEHRD and Provincial Educational Training Centers.
  2. Roll-out CSE Mentoring and Coaching Guideline to scale-up the mentoring and coaching support to CSE trained teachers in priority palikas in Baitadi, Bajhang, Achham, Rukum East and Kapilbastu districts.
  3. Provide technical support to local government (Rukum-East) to implement CSE local curriculum.
  4. Revise the CSE training package finalization and endorsement meeting.

Through its technical expertise, SISo Nepal has contributed to develop a comprehensive orientation package designed to:

  • Foster sensitive and adolescent-friendly service delivery to ensure adolescents have access to appropriate care.
  • Promote collaborative engagement among stakeholders to enhance ASRH service provision.

As an implementing partner of UNFPA under the Country Program Action Plan (2018-2022), SISo Nepal has played a pivotal role in advancing gender-responsive Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) by integrating it into the curriculum and expanding its reach to prevent gender-based violence.

With financial support from AusAid/UNFPA (2021), SISo Nepal has provided technical and capacity-building support to the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD) of Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), and provincial and local governments in governments in Koshi, Bagmati, Lumbini and Sudur Pashchim provinces of Nepal.

Key initiatives include:

  • Advocacy and orientation programs on CSE for government stakeholders and school authorities.
  • Developing and enhancing CSE curricula to align with national education standards.
  • Conducting Training of Trainers (ToT) on CSE for trainers, educators and facilitators.
  • Developing mentoring and coaching guidelines for CSE implementation in schools.

Collaboration: Provincial Health Training Center Bagmati Province 

As part of its commitment to strengthening Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) information and services, SISo Nepal provided technical assistance to the Provincial Health Training Center, Bagmati Province, in financial support from with GIZ (March 2021 – June 2021).

Key contributions of SISo Nepal included the development of ASRH training packages tailored for various stakeholders, ensuring a comprehensive approach to adolescent health education. These training packages included: 

  • ASRH counseling training package for school health nurses to enhance their capacity in providing adolescent-friendly counseling services.
  • ASRH training package for teachers and peer educators to support the effective dissemination of ASRH knowledge in schools.
  • Orientation package on ASRH for adolescents and parents, promoting awareness, open communication, and informed decision-making regarding adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

Financial Support: World Health Organization (WHO)

Collaboration: Family Welfare Division (FWD) of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP)and DPHOs. 

In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Family Welfare Division (FWD) of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), SISo Nepal conducted a comprehensive assessment on the access and utilization of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services among adolescents in Nepal. This assessment, carried out between October and December 2019, represented three key ecological regions of Nepal: Mountain, Hill, and Terai, to ensure a diverse and inclusive understanding of the challenges and opportunities for adolescent SRH services across different geographical settings.

Key Contributions

  • Conducted data collection and analysis to assess how adolescents access and utilize SRH services in varied ecological regions.
  • Provided valuable insights into barriers and facilitators for adolescents’ use of SRH services, helping to inform policy and programmatic decisions.

Financial Support: Save the Children International Nepal/ Healthy Transition for Nepali Youth Porject

Collaboration:  National Health Education, Information and Communication Center (NHEICC), Family Welfare Division(FWD) of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). 

In financial support from Save the Children International Nepal under the Healthy Transition for Nepali Youth Project, SISo Nepal provided technical assistance to the National Health Education, Information and Communication Center (NHEICC) of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). This initiative, carried out between September 2018 and January 2019, focused on the development of a comprehensive SBCC package and Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) curriculum.

The curricula and materials developed as part of this effort aimed to address critical aspects of adolescent health, including:

  • Family Planning and Contraception, to ensure adolescents have access to appropriate and accurate information on sexual and reproductive health.
  • Antenatal and Postnatal Care (ANC and PNC), emphasizing the importance of maternal health for adolescent mothers.
  • Mental Health of Adolescents, recognizing the growing importance of mental well-being in adolescent development.
  • Life Skills education, empowering adolescents with the knowledge and tools to navigate challenges and make informed decisions about their health.

Key Outcomes

  • Strengthened SBCC materials to promote positive health behaviors among adolescents.
  • Contributed to the development of a holistic ASRH curriculum that addresses key areas of adolescent health.
  • Enhanced adolescent-focused health communication strategies, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

SISo Nepal, as an implementing partner of UNFPA under the Country Program Action Plan (2013-2017 and 2018-2022), provided technical assistance to the Center for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD)—formerly the National Center for Educational Development (NCED)—under the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST), Nepal.

This initiative, part of the “Enhancing Adolescents and Young People’s Knowledge on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) through Formal and Informal Education Linking with Adolescent-Friendly Services in Nepal” program, was implemented in collaboration with UNFPA, CEHRD/MoEST, and the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP).

Key Initiatives included:

  • Capacity Building: Strengthening the institutional capacity of MoEST/CEHRD in CSE implementation.
  • Training Package: Developing trainers guide and resource materials for teachers on CSE.
  • Training: Conducting Training of Trainers (ToT) for Trainers of NCED and ETCs on CSE.
  • Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM): Rolling out MHM programs in schools.
  • Establishing Adolescent-Friendly Information Corners (AFIC): Providing orientation and support on the establishment and management of AFIC in schools to improve access comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health rights and sexual and reproductive health services.

Key Intervention Areas

  1. Key Intervention Area- Advocate for age appropriate Comprehensive Sexuality Education that reaches young people both in and out of school:
    1. Policy Makers: Conducted Advocacy Dialogue and Interaction with the federal parliamentarians (90 parliamentarians). The parliamentarians made their commitment to include the Comprehensive Sexuality Education in the formal and non-formal education curriculum.
    2. Media: Conducted advocacy workshops with the media people/journalists. The journalists express their commitment to advocate for the position of at least one health and education teacher in each school, advocacy for inclusion of CSE national.
  • Key Stakeholders: Conducted series of CSE technical working group meetings with key stakeholders of CSE.

Development of CSE package: Teachers Resource Material (TRM) on CSE including development of CSE topics/contents to include in the Teachers Professional Development (TPD) and Trainers Guide (TG) and Curriculum for the training of trainers and teachers training (Customized Training of teachers),
    2. Training of Trainers (ToT): (87 trainers developed from entire (29) Educational Training Centers of National Center for Educational Development (NCED) of MoEST from across the country,
  • Training to Teachers: Trained 204 teachers from 5 districts (Baitadi, Bajhang, Rukum, Sindhuli and Udayapur),
  1. TOT on MHM: Trained 14 trainers (Health care providers, teachers, and other staff of DEO) on MHM and provided training to 59 people (Nurses 29 and Teachers 30) on MHM with material support in Sindhuli district.
  2. Orientation on AFIC: Provided orientation to 280 (133 teachers and 147 health care provides on establishing and managing the Adolescent Friendly Information Corners in 131 schools in 10 districts (Baitadi, Bajhang, Achham, Bajura, Rukum, Sindhuli, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Sunsari and Udayapur) along with the recording and reporting tools.
  3. Tools: Developed recording reporting tool for recording of utilization of AFIC 
  1. Key Intervention area 3: Generate Evidence and Document Lesson Learned to inform Policy Planning in Education with due Consideration to inequality and Gender norms: A baseline study was conducted on utilization of ASRH/AFS service by the adolescents in 5 districts and report developed. Similarly, lesson learnt were collected during the program period.

SISo Nepal has provided technical support to the Family Health Division (FHD) under the Department of Health Services (DoHS), with the aim of enhancing the quality of adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) services in Nepal. As an implementing partner of UNFPA, SISo Nepal has been actively contributed in supporting the National ASRH Program since November 2014, in collaboration with NHTC and FHD, the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), and other key stakeholders.

Key Contributions:

  • Technical Assistance: Supporting policy implementation and capacity-building efforts to strengthen ASRH service delivery.
  • Quality Improvement: Enhancing adolescent-friendly health services by integrating global best practices and national guidelines.

SISo Nepal has provided technical support to the National Health Training Center (NHTC) and Family Health Division (FHD)/Department of Health Services (DoHS), with the aim of enhancing the quality of adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) services in Nepal. As an implementing partner of UNFPA, SISo Nepal has been actively engaged in supporting the National ASRH Program since November 2014, in collaboration with NHTC, NHEICC and FHD of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and other key stakeholders.

Key Contributions:

  • Training & Capacity Building: Providing technical support in designing and developing training package on ASRH, training to trainers and healthcare providers and program implementers.
  • Program Implementation: Assisting in the rollout of ASRH initiatives to improve accessibility and effectiveness.

SISo Nepal has implemented the Life Skills-Based Prevention of Tobacco Use Among Adolescents program in Kabhrepalanchok District in 2014. This initiative, supported by the Health Tax Fund under the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), aimed to reduce tobacco use among adolescents through education, awareness, and behavior change interventions.

Key Initiative:

  • Tobacco Prevention & Control: Educating adolescents on the health risks associated with tobacco use.
  • Life Skills Development: Equipping young people with essential life skills to resist peer pressure and make informed decisions.

Collaboration: Family Planning Association of Nepal (FPAN). 

In collaboration with the Family Planning Association of Nepal (FPAN), SISo Nepal developed the Youth-Friendly Service Delivery Module to enhance the capacity of healthcare providers in delivering adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) and Family Planning services. This initiative, carried out from March to June 2014, aimed to ensure that family planning and reproductive health services are more accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of young people in Nepal.

SISo Nepal, in collaboration with Plan International Nepal, conducted a comprehensive review and revision of the Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) Program being implemented in Plan Nepal supported program districts through the NGO partners in Nepal, to enhance its effectiveness in promoting positive health and social behaviors. This initiative, implemented from March to September 2013, focused on improving SBCC strategies and curriculum to better engage communities and drive sustainable behavior change.

Key Contributions:

  • Program Assessment & Revision: Evaluated the existing SBCC program to identify gaps and areas for improvement.
  • Curriculum & Package Development: Designed an updated Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) curriculum to strengthen program implementation.
  • Community Engagement & Awareness: Enhanced communication strategies to drive behavioral shifts in health, education, and social development.

From August to September 2012, SISo Nepal conducted Community Home-Based Care (CHBC) training for CHBC workers, health staff, and service providers operating Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) and Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) services at the community level.

SISo Nepal led a comprehensive capacity-building initiative to strengthen HIV risk reduction efforts among Most-at-Risk Adolescents (MARA) and Especially Vulnerable Adolescents (EVA) in Kathmandu, Mahottari, and Rautahat districts (July to December 2012). This initiative was implemented in close collaboration with the Family Health Division (FHD), the National Center for AIDS and STD Control (NCASC), District Public Health Offices (DPHOs), District Development Committees (DDCs), UNFPA, and UNICEF. This initiative reinforced SISo Nepal’s commitment to reducing HIV risks among vulnerable adolescents by enhancing education, awareness, and capacity-building efforts at national, regional, and community levels.

SISo Nepal successfully organized a National Symposium on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) Services in June–July 2011, bringing together key stakeholders, policymakers, and adolescents to discuss and strengthen ASRH service delivery in Nepal. This event was conducted in close coordination and collaboration with the Family Health Division (FHD), the National Center for AIDS and STD Control (NCASC), UNICEF, and the Ministerial Leadership Initiative (MLI), with technical and financial support from MLI, USA. Through this initiative, SISo Nepal played an important role to youth engagement and policy development in adolescent sexual and reproductive health in Nepal.

SISo Nepal conducted a workplace-based orientation program on HIV/AIDS prevention, control, care and support for the entire staff of GTZ Nepal, in collaboration with GTZ and the National Center for AIDS and STD Control (NCASC). This orientation program enhanced the HIV/AIDS awareness among GTZ Nepal staff, promoting a healthier and more informed workplace and contributing to the broader efforts of HIV prevention and care in Nepal. 

Key Activities & Contributions:

  • Workplace Orientation: Delivered HIV/AIDS education sessions tailored specifically for employees, focusing on prevention, control measures, care and support, and the importance of Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT).
  • Comprehensive Program Coverage: The program covered a range of critical topics, including HIV transmission, STI prevention, support for people living with HIV, and the role of the workplace in creating a supportive environment for employees affected by HIV.

Empowerment and Awareness: Focused on empowering employees to not only protect themselves but also to become advocates for HIV awareness and support within their broader communities.

Collaboration: SISo Nepal and Nepalese Army

SISo Nepal, in collaboration with the Nepalese Army, conducted series of Orientation sessions on HIV/AIDS prevention, control, care and support, and Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) for Nepalese Army personnel involved in the UN Peacekeeping Force. This program was held at the Birendra Peacekeeping Training Center in Panchkhal, Kabhrepalanchok District. This program contributed to the Nepalese Army’s ongoing commitment to HIV/AIDS prevention within its ranks, ensuring that peacekeepers are well-informed and equipped to serve in global peacekeeping missions with the knowledge to protect themselves and others from HIV.

Targeted Orientation for Peacekeeping Personnel: Focused on providing HIV/AIDS education to Nepalese Army personnel who were preparing for peacekeeping missions in various countries, addressing the unique challenges faced by peacekeepers and ensuring they were equipped with the knowledge to protect themselves and their communities.

Collaboration: SISo Nepal/UNICEF and DOE/MOE 

SISo Nepal, in collaboration with UNICEF and department of Education/Ministry of Education, developed a comprehensive training manual and conducted a Training of Trainers (ToT) program to enhance the capacity of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and School Management Committee (SMC) members. This initiative, under the DACAW Program, aimed to strengthen school governance, improve stakeholder engagement, and promote effective educational leadership at the community level.
